Primary & Secondary

YSP is an ideal environment for teaching and learning about sculpture and a wide range of other subjects. We offer unique workshops and tours to provide an enhanced focus and stimulus for pupils, from KS1 to KS5 level. All workshops and tours are led by experienced artist/educators.

Walk, Talk, Make

Suitable for: KS 1–4
Half-day: 10.00–12.00 / 12.30–14.30 (timings flexible)
Cost: £165 +VAT

This outdoor, artist-led session takes pupils on a creative journey through the Park, enabling pupils to respond creatively to sculpture and the natural environment through making, drawing, discussion and movement-based activities in front of art works.

Based on active and social learning, the workshop is an opportunity for pupils to find ways of questioning and sharing ideas about art through creative making and artist-guided activities in the open air. Pupils participate in individual, small and whole group activities and experiment with different materials, such as wire, clay, card and drawing as a way of looking at and responding to sculpture.

Although predominately outdoors, the workshop may include a visit to our indoor exhibitions. Your lead artist will plan and adapt the session to suit the ages and needs of the group and can respond to a particular theme or learning focus as identified by the school.

Outdoor Sculpture Building

Suitable for:  KS 1–4
Full-day workshop: 10.00–14.30 (timings flexible)
Cost: £230 +VAT

In the morning, pupils take part in a ‘Walk, Talk, Make’ workshop (outlined above). Pupils go on a creative journey through the park with their lead artist. Through guided activities pupils respond creatively to sculpture and the natural environment through making, drawing, discussion and movement-based activities in front of art works.

The afternoon session moves to our outdoor learning site where pupils work in small groups to create their own large-scale sculptural constructions using found materials, both natural and man-made. Groups are set a ‘sculptural challenge’ by their lead-artist, based on what had inspired pupils from the morning session. Focus is on developing imaginative thinking, construction skills such as stacking and balancing, problem-solving, team work, speaking and listening and physical engagement with large-scale making in the outdoors. Groups will have created their own ‘mini’ Yorkshire Sculpture Park by the end of the afternoon, presenting their ideas to the rest of the class as part of a shared plenary.

Lead artists can adapt this workshop to suit a particular theme or learning focus if requested by the school. The workshop can also be adapted and delivered to suit the age and needs of the group.

In the afternoon, pupils have the opportunity to extend their understanding of 3D form, structure and balance, creating sculptures which could be maquettes for imagined sculptures or fantastical pieces of architecture. The afternoon session is an indoor workshop and children work in small groups to produce a sculpture to take back to school with them, using scrap materials and mod-roc plaster.
