Early Years

Our programme for EYFS is about child-led and open-ended exploration; exploring materials, mark-making, stories and movement amongst the sculptures in the Park and in our Early Years outdoor learning site, The Hidden Forest. All sessions are delivered by Artist-Educators with experience of Early Years learning.

Full day: 10.00–14.30 (including lunchtime)

This session is led by specialist artists, with extensive experience of working in Early Years settings and of Early Years pedagogy. Itis an outdoor, artist-led session based in the ‘Hidden Forest’; an enclosed outdoor learning site specifically designed for very young learners. Through artist-designed activities, children immerse themselves in the materials and stories of sculptures through movement, talk, mark-making and child-led play.

Children have opportunity to explore sculpture, the natural environment and materials through stacking, sorting, moving, moulding, constructing, mark-making and den-building, using natural and found materials and the inspiring environment of the 'Hidden Forest'. Activities help young learners develop confidence, collaboration and problem-solving skills as well as imaginative play.

The session is inspired by sculptures at YSP and starts with the group visiting a few nearby sculptures with the lead artist to contextualise activities; the rest of the session comprises child-led exploration within the ‘Hidden Forest’. The ‘Little Sculpture Wonders’ can be extended into a full-day workshop, offering a broader and deeper exploration of the Park, with children directly responding to sculptures in the morning through artist-guided creative activities in the open-air. A full-day workshop enable children to transfer their thinking and ideas from the morning into their own sculpture-building in the afternoon. An indoor lunch space is provided with the full-day workshop.

Animal Escapades

Suitable for: Foundation Stage and KS1
Half day: 10.00–11.30 or 12.30–14.00 (Timings flexible)
Cost: £115 +VAT
Full day: 10.00–14.00 (inc. approx. 1 hour lunch, timings flexible)
Cost: £165 +VAT

This session is led by artists with skills in movement, drama and storytelling as well as the visual arts. All have experience of working with very young learners.

The half-day workshop is an outdoor, artist-led session which takes children on a creative journey through the Park, exploring sculptures connected to the theme of animals, from wild hares and writhing octopus to roosters, rats and dragons represented by Ai Weiwei's 'Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads' (2010).

In response to sculpture, children explore movement, sounds and stories led by their artist-guide. From a dragon’s tail dance to becoming prowling tigers, slithering snakes and tumbling monkeys, the session conjures up animal characters and their stories. Artists provide stimulus and lead creative activities which engage with the sculptures in playful, imaginative ways, combining storytelling, movement and mark-making in front of the sculptures in the open air.

For a full-day session, in the afternoon the group create artworks which can be worn or used as part of a ‘performance’ inspired by ideas explored in the morning. This part of the session takes place indoors or in our dedicated Early Years space, the 'Hidden Forest' and combines 3D modelling with collage and paper-sculpture, enabling children to create their own artwork which they can animate as part of a group experience. Artworks can be taken back to school to re-visit movement and storytelling inspired by a visit.
